PartArt4OW is set to bring its unique artistic exploration of the human-ocean connection to the prestigious Institut Français in Rome (Palazzo Farnese) on May 14th, 2025, as part of the "Notte delle idee – Mari e Oceani Verso nuove rotte" (Night of Ideas – Seas and Oceans Towards New Routes) event. This engaging evening, organized in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome and other esteemed institutions, will delve into the multifaceted relationship between humanity and the ocean.
From 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, in the atmospheric Cinema Hall (Sala Cinema) of Palazzo Farnese, attendees will have the opportunity to experience the short documentary «Blue Kinships. Documenting Ocean Relationships». This compelling film, directed and filmed by Federico Fornaro with cinematography by Federico Fornaro and Giuseppe Lupinacci of Raw-News Agency, offers a visual journey into the diverse and often profound emotional bonds we share with the marine world.
Following the screening, Chiara Certomà of Sapienza Università di Roma (Dip.MEMOTEF) and Federico Fornaro of Raw-News Agency – representing the CO>SEA Collaboratorium for the Socio-Environmental Analysis of the Ocean – will present the "PartArt4OW. Participatory Art For Society Engagement with Ocean and Water" project. This presentation will provide insights into the project's aims and methodologies, highlighting how participatory art can serve as a powerful tool for fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our oceans.
The "Notte delle idee" event at the Institut Français promises a rich and diverse program, bringing together oceanographers, sailors, scientists, writers, artists, and representatives from the fishing industry to reflect on critical questions surrounding our oceans. With the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2020-2030) underway and the upcoming UN Ocean Conference in Nice, the event will explore the vastness of the ocean, its vital role in sustaining life, the threats it faces, and its potential for offering solutions to climate change.
The evening will navigate complex ecosystems, spaces of interconnection, and the ocean's enduring inspiration for creatives. Through performances, artistic installations, literary encounters, roundtables, and film screenings, "Notte delle idee" will touch upon crucial topics ranging from goods and data trafficking and migration to fishing, biodiversity, underwater archaeology, seafloor geology, and even space exploration.
PartArt4OW's participation underscores the project's commitment to engaging the public through creative mediums, aligning perfectly with the "Notte delle idee" theme of exploring our relationship with the ocean through diverse lenses. The screening of "Blue Kinships" and the subsequent project presentation offer a unique opportunity to connect with a broad audience and showcase how artistic exploration can contribute to a more profound societal engagement with ocean and water issues.
Palazzo Farnese will exceptionally open its doors across four levels for the "Notte delle idee," allowing visitors to freely explore its extraordinary historical and artistic heritage while engaging with this crucial contemporary theme. PartArt4OW invites everyone in Rome to join them at the Institut Français for an evening of beauty, sharing, discussion, and discovery as we look "toward new routes" for our relationship with the ocean.
