Leading Organisation

Posidonia Green Project

Duration

6 months, starting the 1st of September 2025

Location

BogliascoLiguriaItaly, in the Ligurian Sea, within the Western Mediterranean Basin

In the Ligurian town of Bogliasco, where Posidonia oceanica meadows are increasingly threatened by climate change and coastal pressure, the PAR initiative is turning art into a method of habitat regeneration. This participatory project brings together scientists, divers, artists, and residents to co-create eco-sculptures that function as both artworks and artificial reefs.

The project unfolds in four phases:

  1. Community co-design workshops, involving students, divers, and citizens
  2. Underwater installation and baseline biodiversity surveys using the MINKA platform
  3. Guided dives and storytelling sessions, promoting ocean literacy and public access
  4. A 360° Virtual Underwater Museum accessible to non-divers and inland audiences

Led by Posidonia Project Carloforte and supported by BLU (Breeding and Learning Unit Genova), University of Genoa, Ci.ca.sub Seatram, and regional conservation groups, the consortium blends deep technical knowledge with grassroots connection to the sea.

Expected outcomes include:

  • Ecological restoration of Posidonia beds
  • Enhanced citizen engagement in marine monitoring
  • An inclusive educational archive under Creative Commons license
  • Local economic uplift through eco-tourism and marine culture

Expected Impacts:

  • Environmental: Restoration of marine biodiversity and seagrass beds through habitat-building art
  • Educational: Strengthened ocean literacy through VR and hands-on citizen science
  • Cultural: Creation of a permanent underwater museum co-owned by the community
  • Social: Empowerment of underrepresented groups through accessible marine engagement
  • Replication: A replicable model for art-driven marine conservation across the Mediterranean
